3D baby scans now in Karratha

The first 3D ultrasound baby scans were performed in Karratha last week with the service set to save expectant mothers thousands of dollars in travel expenses by having access to the latest technology in the Pilbara.

Previously, the 3D scans were only available in the metropolitan area, however, Dr Paul Stefanetti brought the latest model of Medison 3D Ultrasound to Karratha with the belief it was time the Pilbara community was introduced to improved technology.

“It is not a medical scan but more a scan for the parents peace of mind that everything is going well with their unborn child,” he said.

“Most of the time when couples come in for an ultrasound all they want to know is the sex, not have to go through all the medical scans looking at the 500 structures.

“So having a 3D ultrasound, you can do just that and the parents can take the time to see for themselves that the child does have five fingers on each hand.”

The scan is not for the early pregnancy, the child needs to be at least into it’s 28 week, as early on the bones are too dense and does not give an accurate picture.

“When the bones are too dense, the ultrasound hits the bones and rebounds where you can not see the features as well,” Dr Steffanetti said.

Melissa Jonsson and Alan Richardson were the first couple to try the 3D scan out and they recommend it to any parents out there.

“You get to see the baby moving and growing yourself,” Ms Jonsson said.

“And it makes it real for me,” Mr Richardson said.

“As the father, you don’t get to feel the baby moving but seeing it on the screen you can see what it looks like and it’s an eye opener that it really is happening.”

“When we have the ultrasound, I feel closer to Alan because it is something for us,” Ms Jonsson said.

Dr Paul Stefanetti will be in Karratha every Monday and Tuesday nights with a half hourly  costing $300 with patients taking home two pictures and a DVD to show to whole family.

For bookings please contact Dr Stefanetti direct on 0413-352-573 or Dr Graham Bull on 0419-281-225.
