Spirit Radio gets tickled pink

Raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation was the name of the game when Hedland’s 1026 am Spirit Radio station held a massive nine hour “Pink Ribbon Radio Auction-a-thon” on October 21 and cracked $20, 000.

Twenty-six items from local businesses went up for auction throughout the marathon event, during which time announcers Jeff Tighe and Nigel Slater kept listeners up to date with offerings and prices.

When one anonymous bidder offered $6000 for Nigel to dye his hair, pink became not only the highlight of the day, but of Nigel’s head.

Spirit Radio’s Minji Kwon had already dyed Jeff’s hair pink for the event, so Nigel had little choice but to blush and let her get on with it.

Jeff said that Nigel’s response to having his hair sprayed was, if not brave, extremely entertaining.

“I liked that Nigel was NOT into having his hair dyed; it made for great radio,” Jeff said.

“There’s nothing better than the smell of aerosol, the rattle of a can and the tormented screams of a radio announcer!”

In terms of having his own hair pinked, Jeff said it felt pretty cold, like having deodorant sprayed all over his head!

“But I loved it; Minji did a great job – she wants me to go perma pink,” he said.

Station manager Maria Slater said Spirit was lucky to have received monetary donations of approximately $11, 200 from various companies throughout Port and South Hedland.

They also made $8,845 on items from companies including Harvey Norman, many of which offered items before the day and others, such as Charmers Jewellers and Bull Creek Driving School, who donated items during the day.

“This is an amazing effort from all my team as we have exceeded last year’s figures of $12,483,” Mrs Slater said.

“Without the help of Jeff Tighe, Minji Kwon and Nigel Slater, I would not have been able to pull this day off!”

Jeff agreed with the event’s success and praised all the businesses who donated goods and listeners who rang in bids.

“It was an incredible day, with literally hundreds of phone calls, some very generous donations and heaps of fun!” Jeff said.

Listener Andrew summed up the day’s success on the station’s website, saying, “Well done to all involved in the Breast Cancer Auction, kick it up a notch absoflaminlutley [sic] fanfriggintastic.”
