Women in Business – Kylah Morrison
Kylah Morrison has definitely earned her spot as a hard working woman, after studying engineering at university for five years, now, as of November 1, 2011, Kylah has had her work published in a book with other writers, including authors from the internationally acclaimed book, The Secret.
Kylah finished school at the end of 2001, left home three months later and headed to university where she studied engineering.
“At the end of my degree I did a Masters of Engineering Management which was the best year I had a university,” she said.
“Everything started to fall into place; I learnt about commercialisation of products, marketing and sales, business strategy and other fundamentals like accounting and economics.
“Basically I learnt why engineers design and make products, and why some companies are more successful than others.”
Since completing her studies, Kylah has worked as an engineer in the oil and gas industry offshore and onshore for Woodside, for five years.
“For a long time I questioned whether doing engineering was really what I wanted to do,” she said.
“Having done the Masters in Engineering Management, I’d been given a taste of business and I loved it.
“Gradually I’ve come to realise that there are always opportunities at work to get involved with things not always specific to your role.
“These opportunities have really helped me better understand what aspects I do really enjoy in engineering and how I can link them in with the business needs as a whole.”
Now, Kylah has started up her own business called Zest e-Biz which provides coaching for businesses wanting support with business planning, getting the most from employees and systemising processes in the workplace leading to business excellence.
“Probably the hardest thing I struggled with was starting up coaching small to medium businesses in the areas of business planning and value creation,” she said.
“I’ve only been going a couple of months with the majority of it being pro-bono until I get some runs on the board.
“I was afraid of people questioning why I was doing something completely different to my day job.
“However, after talking to a number of people in the coaching industry and people at work, I realised with the beauty of the internet I’m able to do everything I need to do outside of work hours.”
Another opportunity that has helped Kylah overcome the fear of trying something new was writing a chapter in a book launched on November 1, 2011 called Adventures in Manifesting – Success & Spirituality.
“In writing my chapter, now published alongside authors from The Secret, I gained perspective of where I was at and where I want to be heading,” she said.
“The book contains 30 stories from authors who describe their experiences with the art of manifesting success and spirituality.
“My chapter is more about becoming aware of this and my journey towards manifesting success.
“The authors come from all walks of life sharing wisdom and insight of how they each achieved their greatest desires.
“The book was designed for people to find personal resonance within every chapter.”
Copies can be purchased from Angus & Robertson in the Karratha Centro, or from www.zestebiz.com.
There will be a book signing at Angus & Robertson on November 12 and 13 and she will also be at the markets in Millars Well this month and next.
