$12,000 raised by Pannawonica

by on April 7, 2012 – 2:30 pmNo Comment | 890 views

The Pannawonica community showed just how supportive and generous they are when the town hosted the 2012 Worlds Greatest Shave and Crazy Hair Day.

The wonderful effort kicked off at the Pannawonica Primary School on Friday March 23, with all students and teachers donating a gold coin to have their hair sprayed crazy funky colours and styles. The school was a blaze of colour and raised $220 for the cause.

The “Shave Off” event on March 24 at The Sports Club was one to remember with five brave volunteers putting their heads on the block or in some cases their legs, chest and back as the town got ready to lose some hair.

The event kicked off with the wonderfully hairy Kerry Sweetman from VDM who shaved off some amazing facial hair raising nearly $2,000 with his new look.

Kerry hadn’t shaved for over three years and the last time he did was also a brave shave for cancer.

Our waxers were kept very busy with two of our very own Pannawonicans.

Next up for the chop was our very own Health and Wellness Consultant, Bee Ward.

This little Irish lass informed the crowd that she would begin with a story from a member of the community on their experience of having cancer.

She surprised everyone by explaining it was in fact her own story.

Bee is over five-and-a-half years in remission from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Her story managed to silence the crowd and even had them laughing she described some very funny incidents regarding her wig!

Her story helped to drive home the need for these kinds of events and highlight how valuable they are to those living with cancer and their respective families.

The privilege to cut her pigtails was auctioned off and two generous spectators raised over $1,000 for the honour to have the first cut at her hair.

Peter Boyd was next up to lose his locks, who raised over $1,000 for his efforts and left the stage with a nice bald head remembering his “slip slop slap” for the next few months.

His effort was soon to set a fashion with many others volunteering for a similar look. Another two brave men, Rob and Eoin volunteered to wax for this wonderful cause.

Eoin, following Bee’s story, which hit home for him, spontaneously decided that if he could raise $500 he would wax his very hairy chest.

His friends were very happy to make sure he hit his mark and raised $520 in a matter of minutes once people saw the chest in question.

The BBQ was in full swing with Rachel Jordan and Rob Brownlee cooking up a storm and by the end of the night everyone left with a full belly, a little less hair and / or a funky new hair style.

The Pannawonica event has raised over $12,316 for The Leukaemia Foundation with trickles of funds still coming through.

The Kinetic HWCs would like to thank all who helped to make this such a successful event, including our hairdresser for the night Deb Ferguson and all our waxers, our volunteers who put forward their heads, backs, legs and chest for such a wonderful cause, The Sports Club for allowing us to host the event and for all their support on the night, RioTinto who sponsored our barbeque, our cooks, Rob Brownlee our wonderful MC for the event and our very own Katie Stringer from Kinetic who was there from Perth to offer her help and support on the night.

Finally, the biggest thanks must go to all those who sponsored, donated and supported the event and those who were there at the event to share in the atmosphere and magic of the night.

It was a massive community effort and the funds raised will soon be joined to the Australian total to be used and appreciated by someone dealing with cancer and their families.
