First round of NW Championships to take place
The first round of the Motox Northwest Championships starts on May 5 and 6 in Tom Price.
The championship race rounds are a series of six events that are held through the motox racing season in the Pilbara.
It is open to all comers who are members of race clubs and who also join the northwest association.
Tom Price Motox Club Peter Cooper said that racers have come from as far as Broome and Perth to compete in the race rounds.
“Some rounds see state champions such as Ryan Lancaster, Robo Lovett and Teniel Morgan racing,” he said.
“All comers who are members of the NW Association and have nominated to race in Tom Price round will be there.
“The bikes will undergo scrutinising on Saturday morning to ensure they comply with regulations and are safe to race, followed by practice laps on the track for all divisions from 50cc class to the Pro Open class.
“Sunday morning will see scrutinising take place again, with racing set to start early Sunday morning.”
He said that race numbers vary from year to year, depending on how many people are racing in the Pilbara.
“But usually we average about 100-150 riders overall with spectators, families and support crews numbering around the 200 plus mark over the weekend.
“The NW racing rounds are the biggest motocross events that are held in the Pilbara, equaling others such as the Newman Memorial and the Karratha challenge.
“Anyone and everyone enjoys seeing the action of extreme motorsports and we encourage anyone to get their backsides trackside to any of the racing rounds we hold to either spectate or come and get some info on racing or joining the club.
“We are always looking for volunteers and new members to help out.
“The riders love the competition that the race rounds bring and a sense of camaraderie is always at the track on race days. If you enjoy motorbikes you will understand what I mean.”
The first round this year is being held in Tom Price, with the following rounds being held by Karratha on June 16 and 17, Wickham on June 30 and July 1 , Paraburdoo on July 28 and 29, Port Hedland on August 25 and 26, and the final round plus the trophy presentations night will be in Newman on September 22 and 23.
