Jason Dewey with all the baseball enthusiasts at Bulgarra Oval, Karratha Baseball superstar Jason Dewey was in Karratha this week, enjoying the heat and getting kids out on the pitch to play ball.
9 year old James Baguley Jason is an Australian who made the move to the USA to play professional baseball. He has been back in WA for the last nine months, and has recently spent time in the regional areas of the state conducting baseball clinics. He is hoping to develop interest and participation in baseball in the regional areas. While in Karratha, Jason visited the students at Wickham Primary and St Paul’s Primary. On Wednesday afternoon a free clinic was held at Bulgarra Oval, Karratha for any kids who were interested in having a hit. Over 50 kids turned up to participate. Baseball WA Development Manager, Steve Fish, organised Jasons visit and was very happy with the participation and enthusiasm local kids have shown in the sport. Due to the interest shown in the sport a Little League for kids in the Pilbara will be starting soon. Teams in Newman, Tom Price and Paraburdoo will make up the Pilbara Little League. Teams in Hedland, Karratha, Wickham and Roebourne will make up the Pilbara Coast Little League. There are coordinators in each town helping organise the Little League teams and registrations are now being taken. In Karratha and Dampier the co-ordinator is Nicole Bradley, she can be contacted on 0433076273. The coordinator in Newman is Jason Dippel, Tom Price - Morgwn Jones, Paraburdoo - Chris Mickle or Jacqui Price. In Port Hedland the co-ordinator is Brad Christensen, Wickham and Roebourne is Michael Saylor or Jane Knowles. At the end of the Little League competitions both the Pilbara and Pilbara Coast Leagues will pick an All-Star team of 14 players and 3 coaches go to Perth at Easter next year to play for the State Championship. The best regional team will then go to Queensland in June next year to play for the National Title and a trip to Taiwan for the Asia-Pacific championships in July. |
