Tadum Lockyer accepting the award for best documentary on behalf of Juluwarlu at the 11th Remote Indigenous Media Festival, Darwin October 2009 Roebourne based Juluwarlu Group Aboriginal Corporation has just won the Best Documentary Award for their film, Juluwarlu Journey, at the 11th Remote Indigenous Media Festival held in Darwin in October.
Three other Juluwarlu productions were also selected for screening – Pilbara Voices/Youth Leadership; Yindjibarndi One Claim; and FMG Survey. Festival judges and audiences praised Juluwarlu’s use of film in providing a media voice for Pilbara youth, and stories about cultural connections to the land. Other communities represented at the festival came from right across northern Australia from Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, and there were some fantastic cultural recordings, documentaries and comedies screened. The most exciting news for all Indigenous Community Television and Media Centres is that ICTV has developed an agreement with the WA government to exclusively broadcast ICTV on the State Government Westlink education satellite from 6 pm Friday till 6 am Monday from mid-November. This means that Juluwarlu’s Ngarda TV can begin broadcasting locally created films again, and not simply National Indigenous Television programming from Sydney. This is great news for Juluwarlu’s new Multi-media Centre Manager, Kate Wilson and the six young Indigenous multi-media trainees who are learning film making and radio broadcasting. It is also great news for Roebourne because it means that locally made language programs, documentaries, cultural, health and educational films, comedies, and local stories will be back on Ngarda TV every weekend! Trainees can be heard on air by tuning in to Gumala Radio too! (FM 102.9) |
