Shire of Roebourne Ranger Services manager with motor bike enthusiasts Katrina Camplin and her son Aidyn. The Shire of Roebourne and the WA Police are slamming the brakes on off-road vehicles following the announcement of a joint patrol initiative this month.
During March, police and council rangers will conduct extra off-road patrols targeting illegal “bush bashing” in non-permitted areas across the region. They will also be cracking down on people not wearing helmets and unregistered vehicles which includes trail bikes, two and four wheel motorbikes, two and four wheel drive vehicles and go-karts. Offenders could face fines of up to $1000 or have their vehicles impounded for up to 12 months if they are caught doing the wrong thing. Shire of Roebourne Ranger Services Manager Lisa Manser said there were two permitted off-road areas in Karratha, one off Balmoral Road in Nickol and the other near Karratha Back Beach. She said the use of vehicles in environmentally sensitive areas such as the beach, sand dunes and foreshores was prohibited. “The Shire of Roebourne and the WA Police take the riding or driving of off road vehicles in non permitted areas seriously and will either seize the vehicle, prosecute or issue infringements,” Ms Manser said. “Off-road vehicle use is only permitted on private property with consent or in a permitted area within the Shire of Roebourne. “We need the communities’ help to catch people riding or driving in off-road areas.” To report an off-road vehicle being driven or ridden on the road contact the WA Police on 9143 7200 or to report an off-road vehicle driving in prohibited areas contact Ranger Services on 9186 8528.
