The Town of Port Hedland is seeking Nation-wide interest from construction companies to build several million-dollar community projects.
Mayor Howlett said that with a suite of major projects planned to break ground this year, including the development of an iconic park in South Hedland, the redevelopment of the JD Hardie Centre into a youth hub and the construction of a Multi-Purpose Recreation Centre - potentially worth over $45 million collectively – Port and South Hedland are taking important steps in becoming vibrant regional cities. Expressions of interest received for the construction of these projects will be evaluated by a panel comprised of Council staff and project management representatives. Expressions of interest are expected to provide an indication of interest from builders with Council seeking details on their experience, resource plans and expected timeframes. Mayor Howlett added Council hoped that calling for expressions of interest for all of the three major projects at once, would stimulate interest from the biggest and best qualified construction companies in the country. “The evaluation panel will consider all elements against the selection criteria and identify and invite the most suitable builders to submit tenders - we are hoping the expression of interest method will speed up the tender process which can be as long as three months for projects of this magnitude.” “Having all of the three projects running at the same time could enable Council to make significant savings in project management and delivery costs.” Expressions of interest close on the 10th of March and recommendations on suitable tenders will be presented for Council’s consideration at the March ordinary meeting. Funds for these projects have come from BHP Billiton Iron Ore, the South Hedland New Living Project through the Department of Housing, the Town of Port Hedland, Newcrest Mining and the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Scheme.
