Martial arts mums ready to kick butt. A keen group of local mums have taken up martial arts training at JJ’s Taekwondo Club in South Hedland.
Training twice a week and proving they have what it takes to make the grade many have joined their children at the club and enjoy the basic fitness, learning self defense techniques and new skills while sharing time together. But it doesn’t end there - students are also taught the values and principles on which Taekwondo is based. Demonstrating and practicing respect, courtesy, self control and perseverance is all part of the training. Instructor Jay Jay Gonzalez is thrilled with the new enrollments and says, “It’s great to see these mums demonstrating to the children what it means to persevere and not give up when something seems too difficult. Mums (and Dads) are the best role models in any child’s life. Through experiencing and sharing the principles of Taekwondo with their children, not just when they’re training but outside the club and in their everyday lives, they are building a strong foundation of morals and values that their children can take with them into adulthood. It’s good to see the children helping their mums to get a movement correct and showing them respect.” “I just love it!!” commented one mother, “I was a bit apprehensive at first thinking I could never do it, but I highly recommend it to any mum or dad. Great exercise, great stress relief, I can yell or Kihap as it is said in Korean, as loud as I want. I feel confident that I can defend myself should a ‘situation’ arise, and I love the fact that the disciplines of Taekwondo that Jay Jay teaches is rubbing off on my kids – it’s the best thing we’ve done as a family!” |
