Nadia Smyth gaining work experience

Nadia Smyth is a little more familiar than most students with the inner workings of the electrical wiring room at Pilbara TAFE.

The 3rd Year apprentice with Rio Tinto lent her expertise to the retro fit-out, gaining some additional work experience and new skills along the way.
Pilbara TAFE’s Electrical Technician, Archie Burrows explains, “Rio Tinto was kind enough to loan us an apprentice for two weeks so we could finish the upgrade and retro fit the entire room.”
“Nadia was a great asset to the job. She helped me re-wire all the bays and also gave a hand with some general electrical maintenance work on the grounds.”
Lecturer Dennis Johnston adds the newly expanded electrical workshop allows more apprentices to undertake their Capstone exam, the final assessment for electricians.
“With more room and wiring booths, we can meet increased demands from industry and ensure more skilled employees in the workforce,” says Dennis.
“It’s a real bonus for the TAFE to have such an open learning facility with modern wiring booths, an extended motor room and refurbished electrical classrooms.”
As for Nadia, she’s stoked she was part of such an important project.
“It was an intensive two weeks but it was really enjoyable because I learned some tricks of the trade in an environment that’s really different from work,” she says.
“Not only that, but it’s great walking into the workshop and thinking, I helped build that!”
